2000 WJ tapping noise
« on: May 01, 2013, 09:59:40 PM »

Hi all, new to this manor, recently bought a 2000 4.0l WJ with LPG, 138Kmiles
Engine sounded as sweet as a nut, overhauled steering box, replaced trackrod ends etc for MOT.

Started to have an engine management light intermittently, took it for an LPG service and was told I had a cylinder 1 misfire until warmed up!
Engine started to run hotter than usual, at one point was over the 100?!!!
Coolant level low on checking!!!!

I now have a tapping engine noise..........

from reading old threads looks like the overheating is a big problem.

What could have caused the loss of coolant to cause the overheating???? Head Gasket???

I've started to strip down, first the rocker cover to have a looky see, but cant get the rear bolt out, access rather than seized???
Any tips for getting the cover off???

Any / all help appreciated!!!

OK, stupid question answered.......get the right tools and persevere!!!!
Rocker cover off!!!

Tapping problem found, cylinder 3 exhaust rocker bolt loose.

Question is, why?
Would this be as a result of engine getting too hot in conjunction with not being torqued correctly?

Push rods look ok, slight extra wear on pivot assemblies and rocker arms on cylinder 3 from running for a few mins when noise started.
should I replace these?

any help/advice most welcome.

Tapping/ticking noise could be the exhaust manifold gasket, as for the water loss look, at the heater matrix water in the footwell is the giveaway sign.

Just a couple of easy options from the top of my head...

If a rocker appears to be loose then it could be one of a few problems, (1) a hydraulic lifter not filling or losing oil, (2) the rocker stud has stretched or wound out of the head, (3) the pressed steel rocker has stretched in the pushrod cup, (4) the cam has worn excessively, (5) the adjusting nut has for some reason come loose, (6) lack of oil getting to that particular rocker, with the warmer weather you will see the temp rise to over 100 occasionally, providing its not in the red then there shouldnt be any problems, had mine through and past the red one time last year, shut the engine off and steam escaped past every conceivable place apart from the pressure cap  :icon_rolleyes: the hoses were lets say virtualy see through with expansion and it took 20 mins to cool down enough to allow me to crack the cap and let it depressurise for another 10 mins, that was after trailer towing a zj up a 1 in 4 hill in devon and only then realising I was running without the vc fan, my fault totally, but it still lives  :icon_biggrin:
