Hi I think some time in the past MOPAR were looking in to  a kit to fit the 2.8L diesel engine in to the 1997-2006 TJ..
dose anyone know if the kit was ever made sold? Has anyone ever done it..
My little 2.5 TJ is underpowered.... I know i should have bought the 4l but i didn't.. so don't just laugh at me give me some options....

I think petrol LPG is ok but i would like to fit a Diesel ..

some very expensive US kits that use the VWturbo engine......only one worth having if you want it to last a decade or two
otherwise US guys are using 4 cylinder Cummins engine....very heavy and narrow band of torque but will last the rest of our lives.
over here........? Isuzu.....used to see a bloke at Tong with a bog standard YJ with a transit diesel

Sure some Lard Rover blokes will pipe up....   Ford Iveco and stuff......or Larger Perkins from ex military stuff...

Have heard of the VW 1.9/2.0 tdi being put in an XJ so sure it could go in a TJ.

With the luxury of the big engine bay on a TJ though it is begging for a big engine - old GM 6.2/6.5 V8 diesel?

Best swaps are when you have the complete vehicle to strip....

Cos with a 6.2 diesel you will need the gearbox so shame not to take the transfer box too......that will mean right side drop front axle so your gonna need them too

If you were hugely lucky.......and came across a CUCV Blazer...... Military spec.......you would have all that in one package and axles with 4.56 and a detroit in the rear........... ready for 35s....

But back in the real world........

Diesel is a horrid dirty fuel. When they go wrong they cost a fortune and now getting way to complicated to meet new emission, most of the big players have stopped developing diesel as it won't meet future emission laws.

Petrol and hybrid will be the future.

The new diesels are no more complicated than a fuel injected petrol engine you just need to understand how they work

Nothing dirty and horrid about modern diesels, they dont even smell like a diesel anymore.

but i concede if you are going diesel at least swap a proper diesel engine in then and not a Jeep one, hows that ?

Most of the headache jobs that come in are diesels playing up and often need expensive computer systems to diagnose them, then a trip to the diesel specialist, we rarely see problems with petrol motors, hence why we only buy petrol cars for the forecourt, there are so many diesel cars to stay away from, the 1.6 HDi Peugeot lump is bad news, big time, sadly fitted into the MkII Focus', where as the 2.0 HDi fitted in them goes on and on the Ford TDCi lump in Mondeo's often gives grief... Diesel motors in the VAG range throw the toys out of the pram between 60 & 80,000, and engine lights come on all the time on them...

We sold 300 cars in the last 12 months and unless your doing 18,000+ miles plus best stick to petrol as servicing parts, batteries, starters etc are more expensive and the extra weight of a diesel lump in a car means you'll chew brakes and tyres quicker as well..

I would rather set fire to my ears than have another VW deseasel..... Drive them for economy and the turbo vanes clog up with soot, EGR valves clog up, Make them do some hard work and the Dual Mass Flywheel self destructs, The PDs require very expensive oil and the camshafts wear badly.... Modern diesels are garbage though I do still like the older stuff like the little Peugeot XUD or the .....Cough, cough Lardrover Tdi

I had a new 2004 GC 2.7 diesel, did 35k in a year, went like a dream, 30+ mpg loved it, swapped it for a new 3.0 GC, again did about 45k in 2 years, well over 30 mpg, and pulled like a train, swapped that in for my JK 2,8 sahara, has done nearly 70k in 6 years, never had any problems with any of them, if you want low down torque and 30+ mpg you need a diesel, as anyone who has off roaded with me will know, I will try anything, and have never had a shortage of torque, and that is what gets you places, don't get me wrong, I would love to drive a truck with a big burbling V8, but less than 20 MPG is not a option. also my truck tows a caravan to events and regularly I do 1000 miles return to do a event. so for me it is a diesel every time.

I agree the Merc Diesels are very good, but they often need big bucks when the miles get high, Dutch spent a fortune on his GC 2.7 on fuel lines and injectors and I had to fit a new diesel pump to it, again a common failure.

Yeah the VAG and French HDi motors can give massive problems, where as the earlier 1.9 French lump will do massive miles with only head gasket issues, which is an easy fix on them.

If your doing more than 20,000 miles a year then diesel is the better option, but higher servicing costs and repair bills, plus having a heavy engine will mean tyres and brakes need to be changed more often, plus the modern petrol engines give excellent MPG, even a Focus 2.0 will do 40 on a run, where as the 320d BMW did 55 on the same route, and that engine again does Turbo's, injectors, dual mass, EGR's etc etc... The most common car we sell is the Focus petrol as rarely do we have any come backs.

At the moment I have two XJ's as my daily ride, yes the TD is great on fuel, but hate changing gear so the 4 litre gets used just as much, will look for an LPG one, yes I know LPG can mess up complicated engines, but the old iron block and head of the 4 litre seems to manage fine, had a GC I with 242,000 still going strong...
