GMC V8 Diesel experts
« on: June 10, 2013, 05:27:53 PM »

dear all
my classic91 GMC Motorhome needs a bit of mechanical TLC - it has a 6.2 GMC Diesel and 4 speed 700R4 gearbox

Any recommendations in the (far) north? Would also like to get the A/C all hooked up properly- being based on an ex ambulance the A/C is disconnected!

I was thinking about those lovelty BMW 2.O turbo diesel engines- I think it is called the M47

I have one in my ZT-T chipped to produce around 180 bhp

Now these engines in E36 and E46 BMWs came with a GM auto gearbox behind them- which means that they would probably fit all kinds of things- Range Rovers, My Camper, My TH400 equipped CJ to name a few
These engines (de swirl flapped) are simply fantastic

Does anyone know anything about these transplants? It seems strange that the old 6.2 has around 163 bhp (only) by comparison!

is all about torque thingies :icon_super:

navistar ford/IH 6.9 and 7.3 before the turbo versions put out all their Torque at 1400 rpm.....
About 340 - 380

just right for towing.......

Mmmmmn.  :icon_twisted:

My K5 Blazer was a petrol 5.7 and almost unusable @ fuel prices 12 years ago!

For the fuel cost to go to Inverness even then was the same as a flight to Miami!!

But I sure miss that turning circle- I could drop it into a carparking space towing the 14 foot trailer with Butch the Camaro and all I needed was 3 feet extra all round!

Mine had the 700r4 and loped along all day at 19/21 mpg and did not seem to matter what you were towing

that's the big diesel vs petrol difference

not only did it use a stack more fuel when towing my admittedly heavy Camaro racing car it often wouldn't hold top on the 700R4!

Awaiting some inane comment from Buldgog about the fuel economy of his petrol V8s.
The V8 diesel just pulls what its attached to, spent plenty of time testing the UVA vehicles for the states, torque is where its at with these beasties

Mine was ok only dipped out up hills it was way cool dropped in to top and loped along at 60/65 at what seemed a fast tickover no more than 1100rpm    daft bit to my shame is I only sold it to pay for crimbo

Torque at low rpm is where it's at, no point having impressive numbers at 5000rpm when you drive at 1500 - 2000. As much as I love a petrol, diesel does it for towing and lugging shite about
