Strange noise
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:45:17 PM »

From under gear lever, maybe a little in front of it.

Sounds like a helicopter, somethings turning that should'nt be, knackered washing machine sort of noisey thingy  :icon_redface:
Increases with road speed
No noise when stationary with clutch in or out.
No problem in engaging gears.
No noise while reving engine when stationary.
Put into nuetral while moving noise stops.

Have already changed the Thrust bearing and replaced the TC fluid, Front prop UJ and cardon joint greased packed and re-built at same time.

Any Ideas ?

Cheers  Niall.

AX15 rebuilds aren't difficult, but you will need a big hydraulic press. Or get a diesel Cherokee or Grand Cherokee box. Swap the tailhousing, it'll bolt straight in.

Had 2  AX15  boxes go like that ......First one went afterw I put 33 s on it and didn't  change the gearing for a year so ragged it around in 4th...
second one had a leak and took it to Tong where water got sucked in and rogered 2  gear had to stop on A1 and use my camping bowl to drain and replace water with gearbox oil.......still fucked it tho......

try and get NV3500 from 2002 TJ......Tis stronger and has lower 1st and higher 5th....and is stronger.....Tis what I did 5 years ago.....no regrets :icon_super:

Blatant sales plug, I've got an AX15/Clutch from a 97TJ and a rebuilt AW4 and the bits to install into a TJ sitting in my garage.

AX15 has done approx. 27000K and was pulled from my TJ about 5 months ago. Prior to removal it was working fine.  Its not been rebuilt as its now redundant.

Hi,

Was any conclusion as to the actual issue reached? I ask as my 97 jeep Cherokee 2.5TD has similar issue. A horrid grinding noise which occurs in the following circumstances:

1. Change down gear rapidly from speed coming to a halt at junction clutch dipped grinding noise. Pull away up into second noise disappears.

2. Clutch dipped start engine grinding noise, pull away quick up change noise disappears

3. In town, dip clutch in traffic in gear grinding noise, clutch back up and quick up change noise disappears

Now this is all a bit sporadic, if I am gentle and make sure that the clutch is fully dipped, during a down change to halt, then I am able to drive round the problem. My first thought was thrust bearing, but the receipts I have with the vehicle show that this was changed in 2011 and since then it has barely covered 10000 miles so I can't imagine that it has failed.
