Upgrade D30 or narrow D44 ?
« on: August 07, 2013, 10:18:43 PM »

Just after some opinions and advice or offers here.
1983 CJ7, wide D30 front, 4.10 gears, aussie locker, all else standard, 33" tyres, AMC 360.
I have blown 3 uj's,(standard little ones) seemingly on easy-going, so may have been on way out, as not broke when tough going. problem is it bust the outer shaft one time and an inner shaft another, otherwise easy cheap fix.
Centre pin drifted out, cracked the carrier and chipped some teeth(CW&P), carrier welded and all still going after a couple of years.

I could rebuild it with new gears, carrier, and upgrade shafts with the bigger uj's, but runs dear, no sign of any second-hand gears and carrier which would help.

I have a front Dana 44 from a dodge W200, 4.10 geared open diff. 8 stud pattern, uk drivers drop so would suit a cj, flat top nuckles. but tit would need narrowing.
Gets me bigger uj's, but also a bigger pumpking, so less clearance, and not sure what will swap around to get it back on to my brakes and 5 on 5.5 stud pattern, so might sell/swap this to help with D30 rebuild.

I think easier for me to rebiuld D30, I have no problem with setting up the diff etc, another option is XJ axle, and swap the long and short side for correct drive and gain HP set up and bigger uj's, still a bit wide, maybe enough spline to shorten an inch each? but should be easy to get my stud pattern back?

Well , lts see what I get back........

I think you can get new shafts for your D30 with the larger U joint.

There are two ways to narrow your D44. Most common is to cut the outer yoke off then carefully machine the old tube out. Clean up the weld then press it back on where you need it. I have also seen the a section of the tube cut out and an external sleeve used to join the two halves together. Once welded it looked quite good and straight but I am not sure how it worked in the long run. Plus side is stronger shafts and gears. The extra size of the diff will hardly be noticeable. Dodge may have used odd outer parts so the hubs and brakes may cause you issues. There are some good sites that list all the options and what to look for.

Swapping about a newer D30 would be a major undertaking. The only way to get 5.5 bolt patter I know of is wheel spacers or one of the Warn hub conversion kits but those are big bucks.
