Rear Wiper
« on: January 28, 2013, 08:35:21 PM »

I have a 1998 ZJ Grand Cherokee Limited. The Rear Wiper works intermittently and to get it to work I have to give it a little shove up and it works for at the most a couple of days.

Any ideas?

First suspect would be the wiper motor. I'd strip and clean it and see what happens from there. But maybe that's just me.

They seize up with crud. I've had mine to pieces then the circuitry that operates the motor ended up coming off so I've had to wire it to a DPDT switch so it works again...  :tool:

If I were to do it again I'd leave the unit assembled and on the jeep, remove the wiper arm and seal and pull the black plastic bush/insert/seal off the shaft (sits between shaft and housing). Grease the shaft and/or WD40 it with the motor on. I found that it was the bush that was jammed with crud on mine as the rest of the mechanism seemed to be clean and fine. Reassemble and see how that works. If it doesn't then get stripping.

Same old problem occured this week so thought sod it it needs to be sorted which I have done this morning.

Removed the Motor and stripped down, removed the drive shaft, cleaned out the crud and greased up. Found the shaft a bit of a twat to remove as I don't have a vice to hold the motor.

Once replaced it runs better than it has since I got the Beast.

No special tools really necessary but as I have a Soldering Iron I removed the PCB so as to avoid damage.

Job done in approx 1 1/4 hrs.

The pick up's on mine were nice and clean on the contacts, with no indication of any bad or incomplete connection having been made during operation.

Mine was definitely due to crud on the actual drive shaft.

Just found this, which is nearly exactly what I did.
