Clutch Problems?
« on: April 10, 2006, 08:09:55 AM »

Hi all

After spending over £1000 on the 4.0 Grand (P reg) over the last 3 months i thought all the problems may be sorted.

Regards

Sounds like the tranny may be slipping or stuck in limp mode. (defaults to 3rd I think). Do the usual checks (oil level, is the oil burnt?) and then get it to a Jeep specialist or transmission shop.
If it's in limp mode, it's usually caused by a failed governor pressure sensor or governor pressure solenoid. Slippage may be cured by adjusting the bands.

Ive just rang a gearbox specialist and was told them about the tranny in limp mode, he said it sounded like the clutch had gone and was causing the tranny to be in limp mode.

He quoted me £1200 - £1400

Is that true? If so i will be trading it in sharpish

Try someone else. You really need to scan the engine controller (which also does the tranny on these) and see if there are any fault codes.

Thanks for the help.

I have just checked my auto oil and it is black. It was always red when i checked before.

Could this be the cause or just a side effect of something else?

Its booked in at jeep for a diagnostics tommorrow anyway (£95 + VAT  ).[/list]

How easy is it to change tho oil? Is there anything i need to watch out for?

It's burnt, possibly caused by slipping bands or overheating. Could also be caused by heavy towing or driving in limp mode for extended periods. Using incorrect fluids can also cause problems.
To change the oil you need to unbolt the oil pan (carefully as there's no drain plug) and empty the oil out. Check the oil pan for debris (a small amount of bronze filings are acceptable) Change the filter and use a new gasket (get the latest reusable neoprene/metal one) and refit the oil pan.
You will need about 4 liters of Mopar ATF+3 or ATF+4 to refill. The level is checked with the engine at idle and the transmission hot. If the tranny checks out ok. adjust the brake bands while changing the fluid.

Well its been in the Jeep dealers all day For a diagnostic.

I drove it in this morning and it was really bad. It will now only go into 2 gears (2nd & 3rd i think). Sometimes it is only in 2nd. I drove at 20mph all the way.

The dealer said the autobox is slipping and the fluid is burnt. A fluid/filter change may cure it otherwise i need a new autobox. There were no fault codes saved apparently.

The irony is i was going to trade it in next week as i have seen a nice 03 GC with Gas Conv.

I am going to try and get someone to change the oil over the weekend as i dont fancy doing it myself. If this doesnt cure it i dont know what to do as a new gearbox sounds like more than the car is worth

Get the fluid/filter changed.. If it doesn't work fess up at the trade in least they'll appreciate your honesty you'll probably get a lower figure for it but you've moved it on

Garage will stick it through an auction and not give a toss

Well i changed the fluid/filter today, it has not made any difference.

It looks like the end for my jeep.

Out of interest how much would i be looking to pay for a recon gearbox fitted?
