Trailer socket wiring 2007 Cherokee
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:46:14 PM »

I am in the middle of fitting a towbar to my 2007 Cherokee. Bar is fitted but now I need to connect the 12n single electrics socket. On previous cars I have spliced into the wiring behind the rear lights but is it ok to connect in this way on what to me, is a relatively new car? Any thoughts wiring diagrams much appreciated.

It's a small amount of money to spend and certainly won't do any harm, and might well save me a lot of time/money/grief. So thank you very much for your suggestion.

Following on is there a trailer connection socket behind the panels on the off side of the car in the boot? Having looked at a few American sites it's seems that their cars may have this? It would certainly make wiring a lot easier, after the panel is removed!

Thanks for that bigjeepzj - although its for a Grand its very similar. I then found one in the same series for a Liberty which was also similar. It seems that the wiring is very straightforward and that they effectively just plugged into the existing wiring. I think to be sure I'll have a word with the towbar supplier too.

You could fit a Euro 13-pin socket - they are smaller than a 7 pin and provide the function of a traditional dual socket setup.

Well I wired it up this afternoon and I'm sure if you could get a plug in system it would be very easy! The towbar supplier said I wouldn't need a by pass relay so I didn't use one. If I could have found a wiring diagram for my car it would have been a lot easier as Jeep in their wisdom like to have fun by using the same colour wire for different functions depending on which side of a plug its on! Anyway eventually I found all the right wires and soldered the trailer socket wires and bleeper to them. Checked it out with a meter and all seemed fine. Plugged the trailer in and indeed the side lights and winkers worked as they should. However the brake and rear fog seemed very mixed up. After a lot of messing around I realised that it was the trailer that was the problem and not the car. So now something else to sort out. All good fun!
