Hi guys, i am new to this site and have looked everywhere all over tge internet for info on this subject but obvioisly have had no luck so please dont mind me posting my own on here.... Anyway i have a cherokee jeep xj2.5 1995 mk1 which has a foofed engine, so have bought another as a replacement, unfortunately i beleive the engine replacement i bought to be the mk2 on further inspection and comparing the two ! I have only noticed small detail between the two at first glance, however my engine is still fitted so i can not see all the other bits such as engine mounts etc! So i was wondering if anyone knows wether it will fit right in on the exiting mounts etc without having to do any work. If so whats required please. I notice the glow plugs are in the side of the cylinders instead of on top on my mk1 and the rocker cover looks slightly different as it has a brace running to a engine lift point. I am also planning on using my mk1 glow plugs and injectors in the new mk2 engine as the others have been taken. I would really appreciate any advice you could give me on this. If not does anyone want to buy a mk2 engine lol. Many thanks Mike.

glow plugs on the top were the std for the jeep 2.5 diesel. glow plugs on the side were fitment to the same lump but fitted to the rover supplied engines. the mk 2 diesel has an electronic injector pump where as the mk1 was mechanical.

sounds like you have rover replacement heads. the engine does have numerous bolt holes on the block to cater for various installations. glow plugs wont be changeable as they are different sizes in length from side and top. No.1 glow plug from a side fitment can only be removed by either removing the head or the injector pump. glow plugs should be the same fitment.

it may sound a simple swap but dont be blind sided by what should be a simple swap. be aware that there were two starter motor fitments for the diesel engine so if your lucky this wont be a problem

Thank you very much for that. I think i will just sell that engine and get the mk1! Shame as i travelled quite away on two seperate occasions just to hear it running and then to pick it up a week later! Never mind. Anyone got a mk1 xj engine?

sounds like you have rover replacement heads.

early Jeep engines (95) had glow plugs in from the side - as said you could not change no 1 with out major work. Later mk1 diesels also had them from the top.

Have a close look at the injector pump - if they are the same you stand a chance, if it is the mk2 with electronic then you will not be able to change easily as you would need all sorts to get it to run in a mk1.

Great thanks, iv also had some good news! Aparantly the engine i have as the replacement is not the mk2! Sorry to have wasted all your time! However im still stuck with the problem of the glow plugs i have on my jeep atm have like a rail or metal strip connecting them together asapposed to the individual plugs fitted to this other engine. I beleive the diesel pump to be manual as it is ran off tge timing chain i beleive? The lad who i bought the engine off said it was an N reg which mine is too, i know this to be true as he showed me a pic with reg nunber, so why are these two engines different? And will it swap straight over with minor adjustments? Also will my glow plugs and injectors fit in this other engine. Thanks guys!

IMHO, it's time to pull the buggered motor out and sit them side by side for comparison, checking etc... sounds like you want to use your original injectors and glowplugs anyway, so why not remove one of each and compare sizes etc? If it's a manual trans, you can check your clutch and replace as necessary while the motor is out...save you a lot of swearing later!

Sorry, just reread the original post regarding injectors and glowplugs, but you are going to remove yours anyway....probably easier with the motor out and partially stripped.

Yeah i understand what your saying, however i just wanted some advice on what to do and wether it was possible before i loose money taking the engine out and paying labour etc when the engine might not even go in.... Thing is iv paid so much on this truck so far and i think one more set back we will be parting our seperate ways! So i just wanted to know if anyone had any previous experience before i loose more money. Thanks for your help.

That's a fair enough comment...different strokes for different blokes! I've only ever taken out and swapped about 21 or 22 motors over the years and the only money that has cost me was for a few beers at the end of the transfer..my labour is free, when the job is for me.

injectors will swap - but get new glowplugs - it really is not worth swapping these even if identical (but I do think they will be different)
