2004 Cherokee KJ cutting out
« on: May 12, 2014, 06:48:52 PM »

Hi all, anybody got any insight on this?, it's a 2004 Cherokee KJ 2.5 CRD, ticks over fine pulls fine untill you put it under load then she just cuts out as if you switched it off. The car had been stood for two months with a blown turbo/intercooler hose which has now been fixed, any ideas appreciated.

The first thing to try is to disconnect the battery for about half an hour (make sure you have the radio code  handy). The ECU has a memory and may be has the initial fault stored. My KJ was very good at this.

I had something very similar with our 2004 KJ - it was a wire rubbing on the side of the air cleaner to the point where the insulation was damaged and it then started to corrode. When the engine was under load it moved the wire which broke and then cut the engine.  However when it was ticking over it still worked fine as somehow it still made contact. I cut the wire, resolderd it and it's been fine ever since!

So the full storey on the Jeep is that I bought it 8 days ago as a non runner, (allegedly a blown turbo) the car is immaculate inside and out, low mileage with service history and has 10 months MOT, all for £850. Turns out there's a small hole in the turbo hose (easily fixed) and the previous owner, or his wife had topped it up with petrol, again easily fixed. The Jeep is now running sweet as a nut, so how that makes me a muppet I'm not sure, but, at least I'm not rude muppet. :wave-fingersmiely:

You failed to mention that it wasn't you who put petrol in it. Lighten up and you got a bargain
