As the question says I have a cj master clutch reservoir and now an xj slave cylinder on the new project. Is it acceptable as they both seem to have the same capacity and rod travel however should I be going fully xj with it as its not something I've attempted before

the cj's are normally upgraded to YJ slave cylinders. using the Cherokee cylinder shouldn't be an issue if they are similar as you have said, the only issue might be the mounting on the bulkhead if its being fitted to a cj

Cheers for the response and will keep the cj top end and connect to the xj slave and box and give it a whirl

I can remember looking into CJ clutch hydraulics years ago.
On LHD CJs the brake cylinder is Bendix AFAIK and the clutch is rod and bellcrank operation.
On RHD CJs the brake cylinder is Bendix again but the clutch is hydraulic and the cylinders are both Girling.
Actually made in West Bromwich I believe.
So if you want a cheap master cylinder you got a choice of (dare I say it) pattern series Land Rover stuff.
Beware of the ones which only cost £9 they're frequently non-functional

Who would have thought it was built in west brom!

Ill stick with my cj cylinder as it works fine but the slave wont fit the bellhouse on the new xj box so I'll utilise the xj bottom end and see if I get the travel etc

I will not be putting any lardy parts on my jeep knowingly!!!!
