YJ spring conversion

There are kits out there to enable this conversion for a cj, what actually are the benefits apart from wider springs or is it a case of "the latest fashion or trend"

They are wider and flatter and give a softer ride but somehow less roll......

The rears are the same widths ....I think?

Tis the fronts that are different.

If you go SOA get 4 HD a YJS rears..... Tis what I did on the 1Tonne..... :icon_twisted:

Will stretch your wheelbase a bit at the front too, bit more tyre clearance, front springs are a tad longer....

Softer ride
And as an SOA you get as much up movement as down....
Whereas on a SUA 4.5" lift you get the up movement with a lot of resistance but not as much downward movement
Best would be RE reverse eye 1.5" lift as a SOA which is what they were designed for.
BUT at £800 into the UK it's the reason I went with Crown HD replacements at £103 per spring

going through the lift options for a cj, SOA and std rear HD yj springs is potentially the cheapest but obviously the height is over width will always raise concerns by all plus it is a rumoured 6"s of lift (??)

new prop shafts required so not a bolt on and run over a weekend.

More like 5" or less if you don't use high profile spring perches....
Also most shackle kits .....like mine that came from RE are 5" eye to eye....
If you can get away with 4" shackles then you could lose another 1/2"? Not a lot but it all adds up if you are seeking minimum lift in a SOA

looking at rocky road bespoke conversion which ties the SOA brackets into the existing O.E. perches and then just adding YJ standard HD rear springs, so the only true lift will be the width of the axle(ish).

there are only so many time you can read comments from internet views. or just say sod it and do it then learn from experience

I think the Rocky Road kit has vast amount of bracketry.

I know it's not the easiest way but cutting all the old crap off and welding your own perches and shock mounts where you want them will be the most effective and neatest and if you are doing the welding will be the cheapest as well

Also due to type approval and stuff any kit will keep the axle track bars (front and rear in the case of the YJ ) BUT in the real world all that can be torched off and consigned to the bin :icon_twisted:
Out boarding the shocks will sort any wobble and sway probs :icon_biggrin:

way too much work for the resource i have at the moment, plus its not a case of bolting spring is another place, steering will be a problem plus new prop etc.

wish suppliers would state actually what is required, back to std suspension lift keeping it simple

Yup! They always say that SOA looks attractively cheap BUT
To do it so it works really well needs a lot for other stuff as you say.
High steer kits for the knuckles and different pitman arm and the,props with Double cardon joints....
Mounts up to be possibly twice the amount of a SUA kit from RC Llama type kit. And that's without the labour......




It's worth it though...... :icon_twisted:
