Another Grand Cherokee Question.

Got asked by a guy at work today for advice on them.  He wants to trade in his Range Rover for one.

Looking at about R-S reg (ish)

I know NOTHING about them, cept their rear diffs can be a bit of a weak point.

Which one would be the best for him to go for..........petrol/LPG or oil burner?

and anything particular to the grand that he should look out for?

He's not looking to off road it, but will be towing a boat now and then and using it to do some soft roading when he goes shooting.

What are your thoughts?

Same here, i would say petrol ..

Manifold and aircon are other things to look out for..

heated seats aswell but they are usually an easyish fix.. :wink:

Diesel ones are ok, but not very refined and are manual. Most are 4.0 petrol Limiteds, decent LPG conversions are worth having but you'll pay a premium of about £1000 over a normal one.
Watch for:  
Bearing noises from axles
Blowing from cracked exhaust manifolds
A/C not working or compressor cycling on and off every couple of seconds
Transmission stuck in one gear or jerky gearshift
Hopping / fighting against steering on tight turns
Plus normal commonsense car buying stuff. There are loads around so you can walk away from the crap ones.

I've always had diesel Jeeps.  Never had much problems with them & currently run an R reg Grand Cherokee.  As long as you don't mess about buying "genuine" parts from Chrysler & use EDM or similar to source parts you'll be better off.

Bit noisy when starting up but after a few minutes to warm fantastic reliable beasts that'll do an honest days work.  i get about 30-35 mpg on a run & 25-28 mpg about town.
