Looking to fit a winch on the TJ. The TJ isn't particularly heavy and whilst I want something with fairly decent quality, it won't be used often. Not looking to put warn 8274 on it!

Thinking superwinch tiger shark 9500 or similar.

Thoughts?

Superwinch, Goldfish and Come-up branded winches are all pretty good.

I have a Come-Up winch on my TJ. Can't fault it.

I have a Warn 9.5ti on my CJ6 and love it, Dad has a Comeup on his Willy's and has run it for about 10 years with no issues.

Tigershark is just a budget version of the Tallen series and uses much taller gearing making them very slow in operation

If you only want occasional self recovery, then a cheap winch should be fine.

I started with a cheap unbranded Warn copy, which I only replaced when the solenoids packed up and had the offer of a ComeUp winch at a reasonable price.

Still got the old winch, just need to find time to replace the solenoids and put it up for sale or fir it in the rear of the TJ.

If you are only going to use it occasionally then as said above any of the reputable budget winches will work.

I used these guys for a rear winch that I will only use if I end up nose down in the muck! It is the 13,000 lb winch, it came with all the parts needed and a wander lead and 2 remotes so you can operate from a distance, there is an option for plasma if you want to spend a bit more.

I had an old Warn until someone took it in the middle of the night along with the mount, front bumper and everything else forward of the grill. The winch was good but I hated the old round solenoids. They never worked when I needed them and burned up several times.

Now I have a Goldfish winch with a few years on it. I have a problem putting my Jeep in bad locations and used it in several small winch events. So far it has never let me down.

winch advice is simple by the best you can afford and one size up from what you think is big enough

Agree with Delk, Warn hardware is great but the solenoids they use are utter crap.
If you can find a Warn at an acceptable price grab it but replace the solenoids before you fit it.

So, best I can afford and the general advice seems to be that the solonoids are the weak link for any winch.

Looks like a 1980's Warn but black!
The reduction box on the RHS was epicyclic, if it's got steel gears it's probably Ok, if they are ally it wont last 5 mins. Well my first one didnt till, Warn changed the design and swapped it under warranty. Solenoids were still crap, but easy enough to get to to upgrade to tractor starters.

So I've got an old Warn that was on the TJ when we got it that I need to overhaul (primarily because the clutch handle is broken). However I was thinking of relocating the control box from the top to somewhere else - sounds like while I'm at it replacing the solenoids might be a shrewd move.

Can anyone recommend alternative solenoids that are worth a look?

Replaced my ancient 8274 solenoids with Allbright solenoid.....and put it all inside where the glovebox used to be......happy days, away from mud and moisture and 4 years no prob.

Got them from Devon 4x4 can't remember the price....loot cheap but worth it.

Always worth keeping an eye on eBay n' that. I picked up a real good cond WARN XD9000 for like £325, it had been previously installed on a MoD snatch landrover and used in Afganistan.
