8274 vs winchmax
« on: November 04, 2015, 10:27:30 PM »

Just stripping down my warn 8274 for a rebuild, and was thinking is it actually any better than my winchmax 1300lb winch. Looking at the specs on paper the Warn is screwed, 8000lb, it's also archaic in design, and has nylon bushes instead of bearings to take the drum load.
I've just bought the Warn, admittedly on hearsay etc without any real research, cost around £600 needing some work, and really wondering if I should have just gone with another winchmax instead.

Been down the route.

An old 8274 will always get you your money back.....that's the positive....

But it is gagging for 6hp motor to make it function by today's standard.....

It is quick but better suited to drive assist rather than lugging dead weight.......but it is swift....

The brake and clutch mech can be a pain and most people just power out .....
Air drum mod means fast cable or dyneema out...... But is more money......

It is an Icon and for me that's the draw......and the fact it will always be easy to sell ....come the day.

I have wondered too. A bow motor 2 on a Superwinch EP9 is pretty quick and fits better than an 8274. I do like the spare and upgraded parts that are available for an 8274 though.

8274 maybe old design but its simple to fix,  very easy to upgrade to a spec that you req,

horse power
brakes,
strengh.
ease of use,

i would go 8274 all the time.

Have to say I always considered the 8274 very overrated,I think you have to spend a lot to get it moving,a couple of lads in our club have Talons both 9 and 12's and they easy outperform standard 8274's on both pull and speed..having said that I recently fitted the new version of the Talon 12.5 and what a POS,had to send back and got older mod to replace, absolute junk solinoid's being fitted
