Jeep newbie but keen
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:20:41 PM »

Hi all, as title I m new to this jeepy stuff.  Just bought an zj grand cherokee that's stood for 5 years. Bought it not running and having stood under a tree so covered in a lovely green slime. First job was replace sieved fuel pump, then fabricate a new fuel tank and fuel filler.  Amazing how well the fuel filler had rotted away. Just the lpg system to sort an i ll be well happy bunny
So now she runs and drives ( of a fashion)  but has decided that it would be amusing to sound both alarms at random times. Any help on resolving that issue would be gratefully accepted.

Welcome aboard! Good luck with removing the alarm, hope it sorts things for you!

What problems do you have with the LPG system?

The control switch has couple of resistors that appear to have overheated so that does nothing.  I may have found a replacement locally but need to find the cause of it breaking.

What sort of LPG system is it? I recently replaced the LPG ECU on mine with a new system so still have a few bits from the original including the switch.

I picked a new "used" switch and was told cause could be that solenoids get sticky and connections being bad with age and drawing higher current causing switch to burn. I ll clean all connectors and maybe fit relays to save switch.  It's an emmegas system. Whats yours an why did you change it.

If it's an Emmegas i think (only think mind) that's a variation on the Leonardo AEB 175 but with different firmware. Someone on the LPG forum could confirm it : http://www.lpgforum.co.uk/

The original system was a BRC Just single point mixer system. I put my Jeep in for MoT and it failed on some welding on the drivers side sill/floorpan area. When i got it back it wouldn't switch to LPG and would only run on petrol. The switch had the three upper LEDs on the level gauge permanently lit which turned out to be a complete ECU failure indication.
As luck had it, i had a brand new AEB Leonardo 175 sat in a box so i removed the BRC system and fitted the Leo instead.

Just had a look on Tinley Techs website and if it's an Emmegas then what i said in the first line is incorrect :

http://www.tinleytech.co.uk/acatalog/Emmegas.html

I was confusing it with Emergas : http://www.tinleytech.co.uk/acatalog/LPG_Spares_by_Brand.html

If you scroll down to Emergas, it confirms what i said about it being an AEB unit.

Anyway, it's unusual for the switch to do all the work as it only tells the ECU whether to run on petrol or switch to gas automatically. Some set ups have an "Emergency Start on gas" procedure but on the whole, most start on petrol and switch to gas at some point after, usually at about 2000rpm on the overrun.

Since changing from the BRC unit i've had no real problems although i think the system has a slight blockage somewhere, probably due to the lack of filters in the system! The "Heavy Ends" (a grease added to the gas to lubricate the dispensing pump seals apparently) collect in the filters normally but i think i have a load in my vapouriser.

I'm no expert on LPG but have a better than average (for a novice anyway) working knowledge as i used to run big 69L Caterpillar V16 converted diesels on landfill (methane) gas to power 1MW generators.
