83 Right Hand Drive CJ7
« on: June 04, 2016, 06:06:19 PM »

I'm running an '83 CJ7 on 31.5" wheels on stock tie rods in a y-link configuration for RHD. Shredding tie rod ends very quickly. I know the steering stabilizer is shot. Is this the cause?
I'm looking to upgrade the tie rod and drag link to a more heavy duty setup. Anybody know a source in the UK?
Currently looking at something like this kit from US...

Any help to get my steering stable would be appreciated.

I have been running no front stabilizer since i bought the jeep and have had no problems with tie rod ends. the tie rods a pretty poor in size and the metal is surprisingly soft. the link below gives an idea of tie rod ends available for upgrades.
I personally went for full rose joint with 20mm thread size. One way ticket on this mod unfortunately and y have to make bespoke tie and drag links

Have you checked the front tracking? not that a few degrees out makes much of a difference.
A tight or seized suspension ball joint can be a root cause

Disconnect the rod ends from the steering knuckles and turn them side to side. if they're tight, replace the ball joints.

x2, check the ball joints before you go any further...

With 31.5" wheels no CJ steering is going to last very long! Got a pic?   :098:
