Advice needed.
« on: November 19, 2016, 05:58:38 PM »

Can anyone recommend a decent brand/model/ type of multimeter for me to use and trace a possible power drain in my Golf.

I am the first to admit that I know little or nothing about what is good or bad about these things...Ebay is loaded with fancy, all singing, all dancing muck, but I would rather pay a bit extra for the real deal.

If anyone would care to give me some advice, or maybe even have a trusted unit that they have no use for...I will be all ears.

Ta muchly.   :icon_winkle:

If it's just for what you said, to trace a power drain (to see if somthing is drawing currant when everything is off) then one of these would be fine

£9.99 from screw fix

Multifunction - resistance (ohms)/voltage etc.
I've used this basic type for various things and traced hints like broken wires and an incorrectly installed stereo that would drain the battery overnight.

I use that one for houses and cars - kicks about tool box and still works when needed.

Electrickery gadget obtained, tested, used and I'm happy to report the exercise has been a success.

Seems I hardwired my dashcam somewhat incorrectly a few months ago...car has been sitting, sometimes for a week at a time, quietly filming the passing traffic and pedestrians.

All fixed now.

Thanks again guys.    :icon_super:

Only downside....I originally suspected a faulty battery (or worse), so without the benefit of the 'gadget', I spent lots of squids on a new one! Tested the old one today...100% perfect!   :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Yeah, it could turn out to be a bonus Gaz...doesn't make me feel any better about the original misdiagnosis though!
