i believe it was 2001 on that the tj had the lsd...you can check if one is fitted by simply raising both rear wheels off the ground and turning one to see if the other side moves in the same direction.....
also have this link to identify your dana

Cheers chaps.

Mike, you should write a book or better still a website with FAQ's for Jeep owners.

24 hour helpline would be impressive too  :D

UK supplied RHD jeeps have the D30 up front. The YJ, XJ and ZG had D35 rears (except most of the 4cyl petrol XJs which had Chrysler 8.25 for some reason), The WG and TJ have D44 at the rear.
All YJ,ZG,TJ and XJ with 231 t/case had LSDs, XJ after 1996(I think) with 242 T/case did not. WG had the Variloc differentials front and rear if ordered with Quadradrive, otherwise they were both open.

Just to confuse things further, some recent UK TJs were shipped with D35 rear axles.

When I chose mine (2004), I asked the sales guy to check the build sheets to make sure I got one with a D44.  Some of the new UK stock at the time were listed as having D35s.

I don't know the logic behind this.  Maybe it was all they had available when they were built, or maybe they're following the US build specs.  The last time I checked the US website they were listing a D35 rear for the TJ Sport and Sahara as standard, with the D44 as an option.  D44 was standard on the Rubicon.

Could be. The 44 was a factory option on US models. Strangeley, my '03 US supplied TJ had Dana 35 on the build sheet but I found it had a 44.

very slightly changing the subject but I thought my xj had an lsd on the back 9I belive it's a D35 diff) but according to some bystanders on saturday i definitely don't...

WTF?

I had one rear wheel off the ground and it was spinning under power, i thought the point of an lsd was that the powre would go to whichever wheel had the most traction?

Nope.   They stopped fitting them as standard in about '95 I think.

I wouldn't worry about it too much though.  Barbie don't have one and she seems to do as well as the trucks that do.

ALso think of all that trouble you don't have with clutch packs!
