Detroit Trutrac

Hmm where to start...

In a few weeks the ZG will be going in to be regeared to 4.10 and have a Trutrac put in the back to replace the factory LSD.

I also want a locker in the front as well but all the standard ones are pretty expensive, ie £1000 by the time you look at an arb+air+fitting etc, same for an OX. I'd like to get it done at the same as all the regearing but just don't have another £1k handy.

I initially wanted another Trutrac in the front but have been reading up and talking to people about how they dramatically change the handling on full time 4wd vehicles for the worse.

Ok, now to my question, baring in mind the ZG isn't effectly full time 4wd as the VC will only start working if the back starts spinning dramatically is it still going to affect the performance? and as I'm also looking at changing the TC to a 242 and when I have that in will be driving on road in 2wd unless slowly on snow/ice etc that would also take the Trutrac out of the equation.

So...is my thinking in the ballpark or am I talking shit as usual? 8)

I have read what you've written but even so, i'd go for the truetrac in the front and have it thrown in during the gear install, it'll be cheaper in the long run.

yes my opinion is the trutrac option front and rear....."nice and easy" i have used this set up on a previous wrangler and for the tight and twisty bit's it is hard to find a better all-in-all set-up.

I went for the Detroit in the rear, Ox in the front.... As per my other post, I;m awaiting confirmation from 4wd if I have the wrong R&P for the detroit as I currently have the factory LSD in the rear, and an Ox in the front. Only got her back Saturday, so not had a chance to test her out at all with that setup.

My thinking is that with the front diff unlocked, if you fail a hill climb, you have one front wheel to keep you straight, yes you may fail more hill climbs, but I prefer that than sliding down a hill sideways :)

But that's just my view.... No qualms with an auto locker in the rear though.

A Truetrac is a gear driven limited slip diff, not a locker. I know several people who have them in the front of XJs and love their performance off and on-road.

Off-road they give grip to both wheels (just not totally locked like an ARB or detroit) and work very well, allowing you to steer easily (unlike an engaged ARB). On-road in full-time 4x4 (242 t-case) they grip and pull the front end where you want it to go, really helping on cornering and as a LSD they do this while still allowing you to turn normally (unlike Detroit, lock-right etc).

The only bad words I have heard about a Truetrac is that they don't always transfer enough grip when one wheel is off the ground and you are running big tyres (33-35s +).

The only reason I may not put one in the front of my XJ very soon is if I can stretch to an ARB setup for full-locking capability off road. Even then It'll be disappointing to lose the grip the Truetrac gives on the road in Full-time 4x4.

If you want to find out from those people I mention running the setup, try some of the other forums as unfortunately they aren't Birty converts yet  :roll:

The dirty deed is done, Trutracs front and back and 4.10 gears being ordered.

So if you see me hanging out at any of your local stations offering my services for money give generously as it's going to a good cause ;)

Hi Rikk, I run Trutracs front and back with 4.56 R&P, 33x12.5 and to be quite honest I think it’s a great set up. Good all round, off and on road. :lol:

As Dave says I'm running TruTracs front and rear with a 242 transfercase on my diesel XJ. 4.10 gearing on 31" tyres. Handling on road is superb, off road it's great.
Find that when manouvering in Full time 4WD on tarmac the front trutrac does grab a little gives a similar feeling to being in partime 4WD but that's just the trutrac doings it job. Obviously it doesn't do anything in 2WD!

I just love being able to power round roundabouts now in the wet with out resembling a powerboat!!

I was well impressed with its performance at Seven Sisters as I've only just put the trutrac in the rear.

Hi, i'm thinking that as i've already got a tracloc in the back on my jeep there'd be no point changing for a truetrac then?

the tracloc wont last very long......once they start to wear, its time to chuck em!!

the truetrac is a more aggressive lsd so SHOULD last longer.......at least thats what I am lead to believe...... :wink:

and the trutrac does not need the friction modifier so cheaper oil changes....

hands up those that have worn out a trac lok then it realy fecks me off folks commenting on stuff they aint tried themselves
i would have gone front true trac and a detroit locker out back road maners at the front and full on traction at the back
o i ran trak loc for ten years no probs it did what i wanted inc competative use

I got some 80w90 gear oil with the proper additive already mixed in and it hasn't made a peep since, worth a go.

Picked up the ZG on Friday from Steve at FTE 4x4 after having 4.10's, trutracs front and back and new diff bearings all round.
WOW, it's like a new vehicle, so smooth and responsive now and the screaming kids in the back..oh sorry that was the diff making a noise...has all gone.
Got to be gentle for a while but even so you can feel such a difference, also because of the trutrac in the front, the steering wants to centre more which I have to say I like as power steering is normally quite overpowered and takes away a lot of the feel.

All in all very impressed and another great job by Steve :)

Next in line is the TC swap.
