Front prop uj houseing

Hi, I have just been greasing the front prop shaft UJ’s and I have noticed there is some play in the housing that holds the UJ’s, on the shaft coming out of the front diff. is this normal or has the big nut that holds it on the shaft come loose. There is no play in the shaft.

You pinion bearings are worn. Rebuild the front diff.

you do mean the pinion flange dont you is loose at the front axel

yes that's what he is talking about....waggers thinks the nut has backed off.....i'm not sure what has happened will see It today and give it a second opinion.

ok waggers called round and we took the prop yoke off then the pinion seal to check the bearing found it to be servicible........

just the lock nut backed off it would seem....not seen that before.

Regular thing with us. First place we look when we get drivetrain vibration. Tighten it up to 85 lb-ft and off we go!

Thanks Hoodoo, Peter and I have never witness this before, total new one on us. Do you use a new lock nut when this happens? And do you have a TJ?

Spot on!! No, it's a Niva, not a Jeep, but I think we all use locknuts. Problem is that, after a few years use, they will eventually loosen off, and, with most Nivas, the gearboxes etc have seen use in several other vehicles. First indication is usually a rumble on the overrun, but a tighten in the early stages, using a new locknut which we also stake into place, resolves matters before any damage occurs. Remarkably strong things, pinion shaft bearings!
