ABS Again............

I've still got an ongoing problem with the ABS light, on my 93 XJ.

Today I have removed and cleaned all of the sensors and the cogs that they register on and it's made no difference.

I know that there is a computer that works the ABS but I can't find it. Dr Mike said in a previous post that it might be R/H side of the steering column but I can't see anything.

There is a box about 6" x 3" just behind the fascia on the passenger side that has a large multi-pin connector going it to it. Does anyone know if this is the unit that I'm looking for.

Also, will I do any harm driving with the ABS light on.

That's probably the transmission controller. You really need to get the ABS controller scanned for faults.

Appreciate that Mike, trouble is I can't find the bloody thing. Any clues would be useful. (ie What does it look like, Where is it?)

On the LHD info it's shown under the dash, near the steering column close to where the wiring harness comes through the firewall. it has a black 54 way connector. The controller you've seen under the dash behind the lower panel is probably a transmission controller. this would have a green 32 way connector.
The module can only be scanned with a Chrysler DRBII or DRBIII scan tool via the diagnostic plug under the hood.

Wouldn't be so bad if I could just find the damn thing so I can have a look and see if it's a loose connection or something simple.

yes your right it's probably just a shitty connection....i do know this you can use your brakes as normal with no ill affect without the abs.

Could just pull the fuse for the abs system and forget about it. On a 93 it would just revert to normal power assist brakes. I've eliminated mine on my 01 with no ill effects.

yes i get your point as it is two separate and independent systems that work together but i believe there is mot implications.....unless you remove the abs part from the vehicle.

Shouldn't be an issue unless they see an ABS light in the dash, I doubt they check to see if the fuses are installed. When you pull the fuses it kills the light also. If your really paranoid then leave the fuses and pull the gauges and remove the bulb.

I've done the same on my '98. There's a separate fuse just for the warning light (no.12 IIRC). All works fine and been through an MOT with it as well.

I pulled the fuses and the relay before and the light still stayed on. That bit must be built by Volvo, they have their lights on all the time!!!

Seriously though, I would prefer it to be operational if only someone could direct me to where the damn controller unit is located.

I have just looked in another manual and it suggests that the CAB (Controller Anti-Lock Brakes) is mounted on the HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit). I think thats American for ABS Pump.

If this one is correct then that will be under the bonnet somewhere. I'll have to have a look in the daylight tommorrow.

If I can find it you might be in for a few more of my hard earned shekels KD.

The later ones are attached to the HCU assembly, which consists of an electric pump and a valve block assembly mounted near the master cylinder.

Thanks Mike. Sorry for the late reply, but I've been away for a few days. Looked under the bonnet and mine is not that type. Still hunting for the bloody thing, but at least I know what it looks like now.

Really Weird. Took the truck to Mum & Dads this weekend (about 120 mile round trip). Coming home and ABS light goes out. Thought 'Bugger it, the bulbs gone again'. Checked it when I got home and it's now working perfectly.

It's a Jeep thing I guess.
