XJ rear diff
« on: April 08, 2005, 11:37:53 AM »

Hi guys

further to my chat with some of you at the 3 counties, the diff prob has got sh*tloads worse & am doubtful of being confident enough with it to take her offroad on the 17th , which really has upset me a little!!! Any help, suggestions welcome as I think its gonna be a full rebuild to be on the sure side!!!

I did see an ad in Jeepworld a few issues ago from a firm offering full recon exchange units but alas, I cant find my copy & now that the mag has all but gone, again, a little upset here!!lol, any of you got the last few issues & would be willing to have a look????

Tyres are sorted, got a nice set of BFG M/T's coming, just need a spare set of wheels now.............................

C y'all soon, I hope!!

Hi Paul

Not sure what your problem is but my rear diff took to groaning when cornering at low speeds. Local dealer diagnosed worn diff clutch and it was replaced earlier this week along with all the relavent fluids

Hope its of some use

they sound worse than they are, change the oil and see how it is, previous owner may not have put the friction modifier in which will make it groan

yup, you did say to try it but I havent had chance & have clocked up a lot more miles since we spoke unfortunately, am gonna try the oil change this weekend as its the 1st chance I have had, but the noise its making would suggest it might have gone too far.......& i want to look around now so i have a chance of getting it sorted for next weekend cos it will be my 1st time doing any serious offroading

Will let you know how I get on with it tomorrow!!

cheers guys

Well, seems good news so far!!
Changed the oil in the diff, put the additive in & so far no hideous noise!!Fingers crossed it stays that way!!!

Thanks for the top tip guys - have to admit, I was a bit sceptical cos of how bad it was, but you guys really know your Jeeps!!!

Should see you all at Ribbesford next weekend!! Be gentle with me, I am a novice to say the least!!!
