New YJ - Fun stuff...tyres sizes & lifts (Yay!)
« on: December 27, 2006, 09:03:09 PM »

Ok, I'm sure this all must have been discussed again & again, but I seached & could find too much....

Bottom line is, what lift & tyre size would give the best compromise in cost and benefit for a '93 YJ 4.0 - sorry, I know that's the million dollar question  :)

...I'll add a few qualifiers...

I'd prefer not to have to modify steering, props, or gear ratios. (except for adding 'disconnects')

I'd like (ideally) to go for 32" or 33" tyres, certainly no larger.

I'd prefer to replace the springs rather than use shackle lifts or add a leaf.

Finally, where is likely to be the best source - and if it's US, then any ideas on the best way to get it shipped?

Really will appreciate your help with this  :)

You can only go to 31" tyres without suffering from noticable loss of performance. These will clear ok for street use with a simple £75 body lift as long as your stock springs are ok. They'll fit your stock wheels, you may just have to adjust the lock stops to prevent the fronts rubbing on full lock. If you want to go offroading, a 2.5" spring and shock lift is fine, any more and you'll get the steering and driveline problems you're trying to avoid.

my advice is if you are gonna do it ...do it properly. dont be scare of having re-gear work done. i know a chap who is very reasonable and does an awsome job. also it all depends on how far ya wanna go. 4wd hardwhere or quadratech are about the best prices for most stuff and with the exchange rate the way it is ya cant go wrong. there are lots of avenues to explore mate before you decide wht to do. 8)

:) It's not the work that bothers me as much as the bottomless pockets it might require  :?

The biggest problem is likely to be deciding exactly where to spend a reasonable (to me), but limited, amount of money.

Cheers,

...as little as possible

The budget is about a grand in total, but I need to find out if I've got any problems to sort out first (it's only the 2nd day I've had it!)

Ok, sounds like a plan  :)  - where would you suggest for a 2.5" lift then?

(Looks like I may have a little less to play with - see http://http://birtydastardsjeepclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4515)

Cheers,

i agree with Mike,

Lift kit from 4wd.com, if you phone they will sort out the international shipping through UPS. Goods will arrive about 5 days later and you pay UPS the vat/import. Its easy and several of us on here use them.

Set of 31's and a pair of disconects and your on the way- speak to mickkharv, he may have some discos for sale.
With that setup your truck will be Pretty capable, you can then grow with your truck when you feel you want more and funds are hopefully better.

And try the fluids as suggested for your other probs.

Dont know of any local garages, are you any good with a set of spanners cos i can give you a hand if needed. I have managed to lift my TJ and a few other jobs so its not that hard  8)

I don't see the point in going 'half way'. Having said that, I'm stupid!
