97 zg Click click every trip
« on: November 24, 2006, 11:20:23 AM »

For a little while now when i reverse off the drive full lock right hand down i have heard a clicking sound coming from the front n/s.
This has now developed into a double click and also does it going forwards slowly full lock right hand down, i have also noticed when cornering that the front n/s tyre appears to be creeping to try and catch up. The tyres also squeal when turning slowly on a dry surface.

I have been down below...
the 1st thing is the front o/s cv boot has split, ive rammed it with grease for the mo but is it fairly easy to replace??
(I dont have a manual till santa's been)

the 2nd thing is, with the front jacked up and in neutral if i turn one front wheel the other one turns ok but there is a fair bit of play between the one wheel turning before the other.
Is this the reason for the creeping and clicking when cornering and is this a likely diff problem..

Hopefully i 'm over reacting as usual..

Thanks

Phil

The clicking is probably that CV joint Replacement is pretty straightforward, you need to tale the wheel, caliper and disc off, then remove the hub bearing assembly. Then the CV joint and driveshaft just slide out.

The play between the front wheels is probably normal. However, if you're experiencing driveline tightness and wheel squeal/hopping on tight turns, this may indicate that the viscous coupling in the transfer case has siezed. A good check for this is to remove the front propshaft and see if the problem goes away. If the Viscous coupling siezes, you loose differential action between front and rear axles, resulting in driveline wind-up.

Thanks Mike,

It seems a bit better since i packed it with grease, still clicks but not as bad..

If i need a new cv joint is it best to do both sides at the same time...

Cheers

Just had a good chat with lighthouse... (very helpful)

the joints dont come as a spare you have to purcase the complete shaft at £285 per side..

I think i'm going to to try and clean it out, see whats in there and re-boot it before i cough up for a new shaft... and i wont be doing both sides... :D

You can use XJ shafts with conventional UJs I think. Just make sure they come from one with ABS or they won't have the tone ring on them. Why not borrow a pair from KD and give it a try.

Just a small update..

I picked up a spare xj shaft off kd to compare with mine. I took mine off today and although the length of the complete shaft is the same it seems the abs ring is about 1/4" smaller in diameter so the sensor doesnt quite reach. I guess this could be modified though unless of course i have the wrong xj shaft... :smt102

All is not lost however, apparently i can get a new aftermarket cv joint for £80 ish without buying the complete shaft its just lighthouse and Jeep who only do the complete thing as spares..
Hopefuly i will have a replacement tomorrow..

Cheers

Anyways, try to use genuine CV boots as the aftermarket general purpose ones tend to be too big and wear themseves through by touching the ends of the axle tubes.
