AMC 20 rear oil seals
« on: March 23, 2007, 06:40:22 PM »

I have a 1979 5.9 AMC CJ7.It has the AMC 20 rear axle in it with the one piece shafts.I am about to replace a rear inner oil seal. Before I order the parts, i have a question.Upon inspection,it seems like the outer seal retainer(dust seal) is missing on the side that is weeping oil.If i crawl under the other side with an inspection mirror,i can clearly see the outer retainer,as also described in the manual.
Is this part normally used on one piece axle installations?
I am only asking, as looking at Quadratec and Ebay sellers, all pictures of the one piece axle kits have the bearing, bearing cup, bearing collar( or inner retainer),inner seal and outer seal, but no mention or picture of the outer seal retainer. Is this because it is always re-used or just not used?

Many thanks for your help people, and apologies for so many questions. The thing is,I have a friend flying over from Ohio at the end of this month, and am trying to get enough information together so he can bring them in and save me a few pounds!!

the only thing not used in the moser shaft aplication is the bearing prelode shims as the moser is shimles makes life easyer i think you may be missing the tin oil baffel in a mormal setup from the end of the axel tube you would have had the backplate the seal set its own steel plate then the tin baffel  they do call it the seal retainer but its only real job is to guide any leaking oil out and away from the shoes as it has a a drain dent in it they get mashed during axel work so i rekon that is what happened to yours get one if you can but dont worry to much did you say it has got discs if so you will have somkind of adapter plate in place of the back plate hope that is of some help

o forgot to say an odd thing about amc 20s some dont run an inboard seal and the bearings are lubricated by axel oil others do and are greased when you order your parts get a bearing lock ring as you may shag the old one getting it of to renew the seal you will need to remove the bearing and lockring to fit the new seal or just by the moser service kitts [one per side] as the dont come in pairs you will need your tin baffel sepratly as its not in the kits

Lighthouse will sell you the outer dust cover oil catcher things - cheap as chips.  Literally.  When I ordered one last year I seem to remember it was like £2.70 or something daft.
