steering box brace
« on: April 23, 2007, 04:16:43 PM »

Hi,
I'm thinking of making a brace for the steering box, been reading that it's a good idea when fitting larger tyres / wheels , it seems a fairly easy job to fabricate and fit.   http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoSteeringBrace.htm

Sam bad news,  can't use that guys brace!  on the 2.5 the bottom of the radiators in the way,  it must be farther forward on the  6 pot ,  but maybe able to run it to the chassis on the opposite side.  so would be a shorter stay  also the power steering lines would need some thought. but i intend to make it!!   Check under yours and you will see what i mean........

on the 2.5 wrangler you have to put a "kink" in the bar of the brace to get a reasonable clearance
as in here

Nice pics   scot!

looking at them you seem to have lots of room for the brace,  it's very tight on the 2.5 xj the radiator is bang in line with the steering box neck, I've been looking around the local car accessory shop and found a clamp for the steering box end couple of quid. i don't want to bodge it so I'll be giving it some thought, I'll try and take some pics so you can see the problem......  by the way I've been having problems getting on to the site, i get the message YOU ARE BANNED    whats going on?

ok looking at the picks fairly simple
take the brace from the steering box strait back onto the same chassis leg and secure it there, then at a mid point where you have clearance brace it to the other side. if that makes sense.
basically it will be T shaped sort of

shame your not closer i could have made it for you

Yeah think i have the idea , i was thinking of something similar earlier in the thread,  have a shorter stay to the nearer chassis leg. if you look at the pics  the power steering pipes run along the radiator then wrap round the s/box, this also limits a brace fitting, i'll try and get a better pic ,  if you get chance have a look at a j/c 2.5   thanx for the interest... :)
