4.0 starting problem

Hey guys, wonder if you can give me some advice?

I think the battery is losing charge very quickly. I've been having to jump start it every couple of days, even though I've been dirivng maybe 40 miles every other day in it.

I tried to jump it last night and the engien started when i engaged the starter motor but as soon as I let the starter motor dis-engage it died. It is showing all the usual signs of flat battery, slow central locking, dim instrument lights etc.

Anyonw got any ideas?

Sounds like the battery has had it but you must try charging it properly overnight. Jump starting the Jeep then driving it 40 miles won't fully recharge it. Most fast fit centres will test your battery for free but it has to be charged for the test to be accurate.

Mike, thanks very much. I haven't got a charger but I'll take one of the batterys out of the mog and try it. I was just surprised that it would start but not stay running without the starter engaged...

Has your battery got one of those built in test indicators? it should be showing green.      just a thought........

if you have an OPTIMA battery you wont be able to charge it with a normal charger. They require a very small trickle charge first then they will take a normal charge.
some chrysler models came with these as standard and the alternators are diferent aswell, they alter the voltage going into the battery when charging.
if it is an optima you will have to take it to a 4x4 specialist to have it charged or just get a new battery.

BTW, if it is firing but won't idle, it's probably forgotten how due to low battery voltage. To fix this, start on light throttle and gradually back off the throttle until the engine almost stalls. You may have to do this several times but eventually the PCM will relearn it's idle setting.
