value! of xj
« on: December 12, 2007, 04:53:01 PM »

took my 93 xj for along drive at weekend, to check for any problems. apart from a clunk from the rear axle/brakes and a little bit of rust at top of tail gate, it so far seems sound, there is no saggy rear suspentions and the engine purres like a baby! its a limited 4.0 auto with 160k on clock! any idea what its worth? or any problems i should check for? i paid £99 for it

Did you give it a look underneath. Rust is the XJs problem. A clunking axle could cost a bit more to fix than the 99 quid purchase price.

BTW - where is your tailgate rusting? Only, they're made of fibre glass. (Maybe the hinges are rusting?)

Look for rust in the sills and under the boot carpet as well.

That clunk could be axle wrap.  Thats what mine was.

It's where the torque of the engine distorts the rear leaf springs, usually when accelerating from stop/slow. I think it's likely to be the Limited Slip Diff in the rear axle, probably bearings as well and likely the rear drums need a clean, adjust and maybe new shoes. It's all pretty normal for a 93-97 XJ (pre-facelift).
