XJ Cruise control
« on: December 17, 2007, 04:55:19 PM »

My cruise control doesn't work. I'm under the impression that the on/off switch has a kind of mechanical latch that isn't working. Though I could be wrong, maybe it's just a chunky button anyway.
I press it in, and it comes out to the same position it started in. the cruise control light next to it doesn't come on, and pressing the other two buttons (reset/set) has no effect. Sorry for another question, and that it's so vague, I've never had a jeep before.

Car is:

1996 Jeep Cherokee limited 2.5 turbodiesel

Are the controls on the steering wheel?

is the air bag light on, does the horn still work, if there is any problems with these i would guess that the clockspring has gone, it isn't unusual for this to happen

That's the one! that's my wheel.
Sorry I didn't know there was different kinds of setup. I looked at the Haynes manual, and it said "cruise control is hard, send it to a mechanic, thanks for buying this book, don't you wish you'd bought a better book now?"
I get the feeling the on/off button should latch like a clickytop pen. but it's never worked in the 2 weeks I've had it. So I could be very wrong on that count.

On a 95, the on/off switch does indeed latch. I can't confirm a 96 is the same, but it probably is. Dunno if the button is a separate one, as there's no part number for it, just the whole cruise control button assembly.

Have a look in the for sale forum, a few people seem to be breaking XJs.
