AT Tyres
« on: January 21, 2008, 08:40:18 AM »

I have had my 95 XJ 4.0 for a few months now and love it, it has 15" standard wheels with normal road tyres; my daugther an ex-Jeep owner who went mudlarking with you guys quite a lot a couple of years ago said I should fit larger AT tyres, thing is how big can I go on standard rims? and what is a good tyre for road and (slightly) off-road work?

The rims are fine upto a 10.5" wide tyre (wider is possibly gonna damage your tyre).
However, your stock suspension will only give enough room to take 235/75R15. Make sure you have rear springs in good condition too.

I agree.  235/75 x15 work well on a stock XJ, both on and off road.  You may need to put a washer or two behind the steering stops to stop the tyres from rubbing on the lower control arms on full lock, but apart from that you shouldn't have any problems.  Strangely, the adjustment is usually only needed on one side.

As to the type of tyre, I can recommend the BFG TA k/o (commonly referred to as BFG ATs).  Quite expensive at £70 - £80 per corner when compared to some ATs, but they'll last 50000+ miles, they're a lot more puncture-resistant than a road tyre, and they'll give much better performance both on and off road in all conditions. They are also a particularly good winter tyre, and perform well in snow, ice and heavy rain.

I fitted Goodyear AT/R tyres in 235/75/15 to my XJ and covered about 35k miles on them with a good deal of offroading. I would thoroughly recommend them and you may be able to get a better deal on them than the BFG All-Terrain (which is also great tyre). After 35k mine were around half worn and my Dad's XJ has had them on (215 size) for over 50k miles.

:imwitstupid:  I have the same tyres as James here. Wrangler AT/Rs. Had them a year now and they`re still in great nick. I`ve done a bit of greenlaning and made my way across the odd rocky route to the fishing and I can`t complain as they`re good on the road too. The only issue was they`re a fucker to balance and i now have two `mini brick walls` on my inside rims.

 Bought them here

before you all laugh ive got kingpin trackers 235/75/15. these are at the real budget end of the market at £35/tyre. no problems what so ever and do perform off road, nice good grip in the dry and wet but balancing might be an issue due to them being a remould. couldn't justify the bfg price.

I may be late on the post, however I agree on the BFG ATs.  I have run a set of those to 60,000 miles with out one problem.  I covered land from the state of Washington, across the U.S. in winter, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, then I did 2 and a half years on Guam.  I drove those things all through the jungles of the south pacific on sharp coral limestone, mud, shrapnel from exploded munitions, and frogs.  Great tire, there is a reason BFG has not changed it since the 1970s. Have fun with them if you get them. :-D

shame that as it was the only remould tyre that was officially certified like a normal tyre.

had no need to space out my 235/75/15 tyres
