GC manifold replacement

How easy is it to replace a manifold on a GC?

One of the ones that I am considering buying has a small crack in the manifold. So i thought of having a manifold shipped to a mates house a few miles away from where the GC is.

Is there much room to work under the bonnet I would assume there is as it's designed to take a V8. Any special tools needed or will i be able to change it in an hour or so with a few spanners?

Not as easy as you think because the intake manifold and power steering pump has to come off too and some of the nuts are quite difficult to get to. Still not rocket science but will take longer than an hour, especially if you've never done one before. Probably more like half a day for a first timer.

i think its like a TJ manifold, its awkward but do-able

long arms help and its more than an hours job.

i fitted a twinflex manifold from the bay  8)

ahhh Ok...

on to plan B.. Get the car home and then fix it..

where on the manifold do the cracks appear??  Is it possible to do a temporary repair?

probably cant get to the cracks to weld em

but, it will still be driveable until you get round to replacing.

The twinflex one i fitted has bellows to allow for heat expansion, better than the original  :wink:

welding a cast manifold is not a case of blasting it with a mig welder. ideally you want to arc weld it with cast iron rods but even then it still might stress crack again

They're fabticated from steel tube. Stress causes them to crack where the tubes meet at the collector just above the downpipe flange. You have to remove it to get access to weld the crack, so it is a bit pointless if you have a replacement available.

Fit a replacement it will just crack again, too much of a pain to think you will have to go through it again in 6 months time (which is probably just enough time for you hands to heal)

it is one of those jobs that just takes time how ever ya do it. tis best to just have the inlet and ps pump out of the way i think. the inlet can just be held out of the way then there is a bit more room to get at stuff.
