xj wheels

I have a 96 xj and want a wider look to the wheels , to line them up more with the body like the later models . Am I ok to go with wheel spacers , if so which ones , or am I better to go the whole hog and find wider wheels. At the minute it has the standard steel 5 spoke wheels, and they are not in the best of conditions.Any suggestions?
