Winch motor problem
« on: March 31, 2008, 10:11:22 PM »

I’ve stripped the winch motor after the weekend and discovered it had been holding up to about 1/2 “ of water in it which has caused the mounts holding the brushes to rust and the brushes were well stuck. I’ve cleaned everything up and freed the brushes and the whole thing is sitting on top of a radiator drying it out.

Here is a photo of the brushes. The top ones are working properly, but the bottom ones were well rusted in.

Apart from packing all the seals and bearings with lithium grease and using some RTV on the joints can anyone suggest what I could do to prevent the same thing happening again?

I’m thinking I might drill the bottom of the casing and put a threaded plug in it to enable me to drain it from time to time. Anyone any thoughts on this idea?

take the winch off and sell it to someone, there problem solved no more siezing or rusting of the contacts to bother you.

TBH what your doing is more than enough, just remember to inspect the electrics after they have been submerged etc and give them a quick clean
