you get what you pay for in winches really. there are some good cheap ones out there but i dont think they last as long as say a superwinch or a warn. you need at least an 8000lb but are better to go for a 9000lb or bigger. the winch works less if it is rated much heavier than you need.

I'm not sure this will help you much in making a decision, but this is what happened to my Champion 9500EWX which boasts waterproof solenoids - a lot of good if the rest of it allows water in with no way of it draining out!

Quote from: "PtP"
I’ve spent the last three days rebuilding my winch!   It’s a Champion C9500EWX and I was quite surprised at the weekend when it stopped working being only 13 months old. The solenoids were clicking away as they should, but there was no movement in the motor. I dismantled the motor and discovered it had been holding about ½” - 1” of water. I spoke to Winch Solutions the UK supplier and they were very helpful with their advice.

It transpires that the water gets in via a plastic seal and then through the bearing at the spool end. The plastic seal is a very strange design and is more of a gap filler rather than an actual seal. It has a slot in the bottom of it, I presume to allow water to drain away, but the gap was full of grease and was not allowing any water to drain and any water built up behind the seal and then seeped into the motor housing through the main end bearing.

The brushes in the motor were well stuck in their housings with rust. I managed to clean and dry all the internal parts and put a very thin coating of Waxoyl on the brush housing to hopefully prevent any rusting again in the event of water getting in again. I also drilled and tapped a M6 hole in the bottom of the housing and plugged it with a bolt to enable it to be drained if water still finds its way in rather than removing the motor assembly every time it gets a soaking.

I also decided to check the gearbox side if the winch and again, it has a plastic seal which had its drain hole blocked with grease and water had found its way in there too! I stripped and cleaned all the gear parts and packed it with fresh lithium grease.

The whole thing was reassembled and I kept the grease away from the seals and hopefully the drain holes will not get blocked again. I refitted it back onto the Jeep and it’s now working fine. It’s also a lot quieter with the amount of grease I’ve packed into the gearbox.

Here are some photos I took of the mess in the motor!

Love my Warn 9.5Ti.  I have beat the crap out of it almost every weekend for a year.  Also the hand control for the winch has a Led light built in to the handle.  This light has come in more handy than you would think constantly.
It is a expensive winch however it is worth every dime, and more.

The £300 winches work fine but don't like water. If you think you're going to dunk your winch a lot ask the supplier if it's up to that kind of use before buying, then if it isn't it's down to them!

I bought a Superwinch Ep9i at donnington for £400, was going to go for a Champion at about £100 less, Glad I didn't,

We went off roading with a guy with a Champion winch, When the rope gathered only a bit at one end it was able to rub against the cast casings and made a mess of the winch cutting through the bolts and wearing it away.It was also very slow
The superwinch drum is different so when the rope gathers it can't rub against the casing.

I think there are a number of little design bits on the better know winchers which will only prove there worth in time. Also at Donnington you saw alot more people going away with Super winches and the Champion stand was relitivly quiet.

Just something to be aware of with the Superwinches. We've been running plasma on ours and bunching of the rope is a problem when pulling at an angle. If it bunches up too much it will break the end casings where the bridge mounts to it, they're only cast aluminium. We've broken both the EPi9 and the EP9 with the separate solenoid pack     ) but need to be stripped and cleaned every time.

Just my 2p's worth

Ok yea I agree that is the best winch ever made.  I love my 9.5 Ti but I would trade it for one of those.

Take one of this
http://http://www.gigglepin4x4.net/8274/twinmotor.htm

and 2 of those
http://http://www.flaminfabrications.com.au/Default.asp?MenuId=PRD_WINCH_ADAPTERRAGGED_EDGE

and you have a 8274 with four 6HP motors costing more than the Jeep it sits on.  ROFL  :Hangman:
