just been offered a 1998 WJ for little money not seen it yet but meant to be tidy only problem is rear diff is gone, only going to be used as a road/tow car so is it worth looking at?

at least your not finding out about a duff diff after youve bought it.

depends on the price then you will just need to take a gamble on a complete rear axle of fleabay or buy a rebuild kit

Who was the outfit in Kidderminster who went to a bloke down somerset way & swapped an axle for a good one, something like £500 all in & fitted ?

buy you a good one in the first place.

ring uncledad and get prices for a full rebuild kit and way up the cost then rebuilding will give you new parts a s/h swapper only gets someone elses used bearings

MJS speaks sense, I believe the proprietor has many & various bearing pulling tools to do the job too

from what i remember very good on all fronts its simply if you are armed with parts prices you have leverage on the owner................ thats just the parts mate and then i have to get it done and second hand will be used unless they rebuild firt

Check the immobiliser system as well...with greatest respect to MJS unless you are buying it for a bag of Tyrels crisps Bruce wonder off and source another one...Issues = grief and hassle...

ok knowing they have weak axles as a start I doubt I would pick one to use as a tow car, especially pulling a cj and a trailer. I might be wrong tho

Its probably only weak when you add the big tyres, probably perfectly okay for normal use (a bit like a Dana 30)

Plus it will keep the weight and thus the price and emissions down a smidgeon perhaps?

the rear axles destroty themselves on std rubber and no lift, friend of mine had one which he loved to drive but forked out over £1k to get it fixed even after many talks with jeep, new axle fitted and the replacement started to show signs of wear sometime later so he sold it on. the mileage was racked up as he was commuting to germany for work every other weekend

Regular oil changes and 75W140 synthetic will extend the life of the 35 rear, the official oil change interval is 30000 miles, we used to have to put bearings in them at that mileage. Change it every 150000 or less.
