Vapour Build 001: 404's on a TJ
« on: December 10, 2007, 09:38:12 PM »

Vapour Build- A project that just has'nt materialised into anything....

Asylum will like this one

Like the subject title describes. The intention is to put a pair of 404's under Asylums 4.0l TJ. But budget has to be low.......

However, with the final gear ratio of 7.54 on these axles. 3.54 in diff and 2.13 reduction in the portals. The Gearbox and Transfer box are just not suitable, to achieve decent Road and Trial speeds. Say 55Mph on road and somewhere near the stock of road speeds in low. Running 40's please...

The Mog axles are rated for a Max speed of 60Mph.

The research i have done on stock gearbox and tranny's has not been succesful to date. I know Atlas could work wonders for £££'s But is there a AutoBox and maybe a 1:1 transfer case that comes from the Jeep stable?

Woud double transfer box's configuraions be doable? Hav'nt got a clue how these are set-up, but i see they are popular in the US.

Re-gearing the Diff is an option. But i would like to keep the mogs internal stock for replacement reasons. Cost to cut  2x pairs of R&P's would be £££'s

Why i mention Autobox and 1:1 Transfer case. Is from looking at the Land Rover set-up's. Autoboxes have lower ratios and a 1:1 Transfer case (Old Range Rover) would seem to be a good compromise.

LR ZF Auto:

1st-----------2.48
2nd----------1.48
3rd----------1.00
4th----------0.728
R------------2.086

LT230 tranny box
1:1 High
3.32 Low

404's
3.54 In diff
2.13 reduction at portal
7.54 Overall axe ratio

There you go, something to read and ponder over your cuppa

Who else has a "Vapour Build" in progress?

Hog

I have emailed Advance Adapters to see what they would reccomend and if they would/could build an Atlas transfer box to solve the problem. keeping the ax15 gearbox and as a straight bolt on the to rear of it. And of course what price???????£££££££££??????

They do some special stuff for under $3000 so will wait and see. £1500 is a lot of cash compared to LR prices for sure and I would have to save up a while but if it is the only realistic solution then am going to have to do the sums and see!!!!

I need a translator.............Gonna have to "Google" Clocking Ring (Now thats gonna come up with some funky results)

NP205 should be a bit safer to "Google"

Off across the pond again into www USA cyber space for Petrol Headz it is!

budget an 404's don't come in the same sentance!!!!

depending what state you get them in an what they come with, you could be looking at spending two grand on them at least.

whats wrong with 40inch tyres???
just after i started the transplant i spoke to king cj an he had said with 37's he can run it up to 50 but its very revvy, so 40's can only be better!!!

a jeep with 404's will work out to comfortable run almost 49/50 inch tyres.

you shouldn't need the strengh an cost of an atlas as the strain is taken off the drive train an placed on the hub/portal unit.

what sort of lift were you going to run with them?
the front diff is not far off central so if your looking at running very little lift you'll have to severely bumpstop the up travel as the front prop is going to get too close to the sump and especially the bell housing.
also the rear diff is off centre so it could cause big problems with the short rear prop!

as bubba said, have a look into clocking the transfer box as it would be a good solution but you would loose ground clearance. myself an bubba did talk about it at the meeting but i honestly hav'nt looked into it yet so can,t offer any more advice on it.

just wondering how will the steering feel at normall tj cruising speeds asuming you can raise the gearing   them tyres will need to be good or very well balenced i take it the biggest prolems at the mo are the center of the front diff and the overall lowered gearing

Dont forget.  I am in Germany, land of the 404.  If you all find some over here, I am glad to deliver for some travel cost.  I have delivered, and installed axles before.  Had a great time doing it too, would love to do it again.

As for a lift, thats all to be worked out. But i do know the wheelbase would be extended. The Lift i would concieve to be the minimium needed to keep things stable. Would intend to keep the axles at full width too.

Plus Hydro steer would be put in play. Danfoss type hydro, like KCJ

Nothing fancy suspension wise. KCJ's truck is excellant. So a good ferret around his truck will help. 4 Link front and rear, possible using a panhard rod on both. But i know this limits flex, but im looking at a compromise here?

Clocking the Transfer? Not sure on that one............?

Hey all good fun............Like i said, this is just a vapour build until some point in time. When i have some idea what the hell is involved.

Still always a good to sit and ponder while recovering from an Xmas Hangover........On the waist and in the Head!

Cheers

np205s come in both side drop if you can find them, a dodge nv4500 transmission would be nice too. autos, th400 three speed is a tough as nuts unit but usualy comes wit a quadtrac transfercase which is crap.i would look under full size pickups to see whats availible.are you sure the wrangler gearbox trans wont hold up to the abuse? they arent bad.

other than that you could use cj stuff but it would mean moveing the front diff

sorry king qaudratrac is a way strong unit as long as you look after the chain it was designed to work with 500hp motors from day one and is not a crap unit but there are other good ones around if you can find them the worst thing bout a caudratrac is it takes no prisoners if you dont look after it and the chain brakes it will detonate but  it will give you fair warning by making a very loud ratcheting noise under hard acceleration

time to bring this back.....
how much space does everyone think there should be between the oil pan and the top of the diff sitting static?
and if you have 16 inches of travel to play with, how much up travel would u want? was thinking 5in up 9in down that would leave a 1in either way incase the bump stops of limiting straps fail before the coilover bottoms out.
