I bought a new set of tyres yesterday and the shop refused to fit them for me because of sizes, recommended widths and legal/insurance issues.

The tyres are 285/75/16 (33x11.2)and the wheels 16x7 black rockcrawlers. The 'recommended rim width' for this tyre is 7.5-9.0" so I am technicaly outside this.

Isn't this just the same as 12.50" wide tyres on 8" rims though (as their recommended rim width is 8.5-11.0")

Has anyone else had problems getting tyres fitted?

There are a lot of people running 33x12.50s on 15x8 rims and the narrower rim is usually recommended for offroad. I'll try my local place today but I'm getting a bit concerned that the world has gone arse-covering, legal nonsense crazy!!

As a general rule, take the manufacturer's tyre size for any particular wheel - you are allowed to go up one size in width (only up, not down) on that wheel. This used to be law, although I don't know whether things have changed in that respect.
 If it's still law, it probably means that most of us are illegal!!

i'm sure a independent garage would fit them for you, i wouldn't have a problem fitting them.

James, i have the exact same tyre fitted onto 16x7JJ rims on my Toyota,and look perfectly fine to me.I just took mine to one of those little cheap part worn tyre places often run by asians and they didnt care as long as i was paying

Well I got it sorted in the end. My local tyre fitter was happy to fit them but wanted to do the spare and see how it looked, he did and was happy with it. Unfortunately he couldn't balance it and didn't have time to do the rest until Monday!

After a bit of head scratching I went to a place that does blingy alloys and rubber-band tyres. I've seen some seriously expensive modified cars going in there so I thought they'd be used to non-standard stuff. They were more than happy to fit them for me, the owner just told me that a 16x8 would be the 'ideal' match but said he regularly fits 'non-ideal' combinations and asked me to sign a disclaimer.

When the fitting was done the owner came out again, checked for clearances, did a quick visual check of alignment and set the torque wrench for the Polish bloke.

I was quite happy with the service and think it's probably the best approach - just check that the driver knows about the wheel/tyre size issue, but then just get on with it.

The bad news was the cost, £58.75 for four tyres fitted and balanced and with 4 old tyres disposed of! Apparently it's the disposal fees??

think its about £3.50-£5 a tyre these days for disposal in most places,unless youve bought new ones then they seem to lose some of the cost

They call it environmental disposal.......in other words, ship 'em off to a yard, pile 'em up and torch the lot sometime in November, then blame it on some youths lol.  I worked for a company that recycled PC monitors, they charged a bluey for each one, we were told to bung 'em in the compactor lol...........lots of profit in "recycling".

£58.75 is a good price for four tyres, the place i use charges £15 per wheel if it's paid with cash

that's cheap - for the beadlocks they charge me £25gbp per wheel just to fit them, i take the old tyres away.....

I paid £30 to have 5 tyres removed and 4 refitted when i put the muds on my Yota

Mine are balance but with loads of balance weights on a couple of the wheels.
