just wondered if you lot have had any six cylinder diesels that you found to be good power plants but not overly thirsty  i am wondering about  maybe a conversion in to one of my jeeps and any body ever see the cj7 that was on ebay with a 5.7 v8 diesel i wonder where it went i woul love to have a nose at that

I've wondered about the 4.2 Toyota/Nissan turbo diesel as the gearbox in the VX Landcruiser is almost identical to an XJ autobox. I'm not sure there is the space in an XJ though and I know even less about the fuel economy.

there was a place down near london who did the conversion for the 2.5 T5 VDub diesel.

or you could go for the dodge v8 diesel all 6.5ltrs of it. not sure if it will fit but there again it drives like a petrol and drinks like one as well

yes i know i put a 2.8 daihatsu in my one cj7 good lump but i like the smoother torque of a six

don't really know much but did'nt bmw do some straight 6 diesels???

i think a friend had one in his comp safari motor out of an old 5 series.

he picked the whole car up for not a lot of money an was a cracking engine an happily took all the abuse he gave it!!!

Dodge don't fit V8 diesels, but the Cummins ISB 5.9 straight 6 out of a RAM would possibly fit. In this country, you'd get one easiest from a DAF LF. The gearbox probably wouldn't be suitable from a truck though.

The BMW M51 is an option. It's a V6 diesel that was used in various beamers, the Opel Omega and Rangeys from 1995-2001.

The Rangey is a very interesting option, as you could potentially just drop the whole drivetrain in.

Along those lines, and thinking about Landcruisers...

Potentially the whole drivetrain of a 4.2 VX Landcruiser could drop in?? Axles are Dana60 strength and scrap vehicles seem to come up on eBay for reasonable money. If it were going into a CJ8 the driveshaft lengths might even be close enough to bolt-in???

Not exactly super budget-minded but for a reasonable lay-out you could have a super strong engine and axles that can hold 37s no problem. Maybe even run on veg-oil???



Alternatively, stay with the petrol and build up a massive fook-off 401 stroker and stick a nitrous bottle in the back  :twisted:

I know of a jeeper who dropped a 4.2 Landcruiser turbo diesel into his J20 made an adapter to mate to a T18/Dana 20 and then to the Dana 60 rear end apparently will get near 30mpg and pulls like a train. And will sit all day at 85mph, not both at the same time I'm thinking!
The Landcruiser engine you want is the earliest 4.2 that didn't get stuffed full of computer stuff, that's the one he used.
I think they put out over 200bhp and over 300+ foot lbs, but some one out there will doubtless know exactly.

would not pull the skin off a rice pudding..................it's sloooooooooooooow - i purchased a nissan partol (i know i know) when i was considering a engine replacement, but on driving it decided not to bother using the sd33 engine.

you could look at the izuzu lump but the early 3.1td had engine issues (failures) so the ecu control makes it out of the question.

the old cummins unit is a reliable lump you just got to source one. then match up the running gear etc
