I’ve a small oil leak from my front pinion oil seal. I’ve tried to remove the pinion nut; firstly with the wheels still on the ground I got too much twist etc in the front to enable me to get a good crack to free the nut. Secondly, I managed to attach a large heavy G-clamp around the pinion flange and wedge it up against the lower control arm, but I still could not crack the pinion nut!

Is there a knack to this or can anyone suggest a way of slackening it off? (I’ve since been soaking it almost daily now with penetrating oil for the last week.)

Would a pneumatic impact wrench be a quick solution? If so, anyone local got one I could borrow?

It took a 5ft long steel tubular bar slid over the end of a long breaker bar to loosen mine of.  In other words expect to use about 6ft of leverage, a lot of swearing and appropriate cigarette breaks to crack it.

I used a 3/4" Air Impact wrench and a huge pipe wrench for mine. It's a bugger of a job.

i think the torque is like 600+ to seat the bearing and crush sleeve aint it. so yeah its gonna be a pita. Last time i messed with one the axle was out and we stuck a big bar in between the lug nuts to stop it from turning. it helped alot.

we made`a tool to hold the yoke a good breaker bar and some determination will see it off a powerfull impact gun will see it of but you need to be carefull as you need to count the turns on the nut a good impact gun may spin it too fast to count
