yes, it turns the light off, engine starts for 2-3 seconds, red light comes back on constant until you press unlock on the fob

does the immobiliser have its own battery or is it charged from the main 12 volt supply, possibly-

a) it needs to charge up from the 12 v
b) immobiliser battery needs replacing, if so where is it located

just thinking out loud  :-?

No, it runs off the vehicle's supply. Does it have the alarm upgrade?

You've had the battery off but did you clean the terminals and clamps up? Bad connections there can cause a lot of problems. Another thing to consider is that the battery could be dead.

If the battery isn't good enough the PCM will not allow the engine to run as it doesn't sense the right voltage/resistance from the battery. I'd get the battery charged again and take it to get it tested properly.

The immobiliser doesn't have a battery so no need to worry about that.

If the battery's strong enough to crank the engine and start it, it's not causing your problem, the engine will keep running even with no battery once it has started. Have you checked for trouble codes again since you charged the battery? If someting is stopping the engine it should show a code unless it is the immobiliser. Trouble is the only way to access the '97 immobiliser is with a dealer's DRBIII scan tool as it is a UK only fitment and only UK dealers have the software.

I recall I had a similar problem when I replaced the battery on my TJ 18 months back.

I could press the disable button and the engine would run for 2-3 seconds and then cut out. The red flashing light would stay on, but eventually it started okay.

Whilst typing this, I also recall there is a special note in the Jeep papers and this is an extract of what it says:

Quote
Important Note
The Wrangler immobiliser will only work in the vehicle it has been programmed to accept, it does this by checking the vehicle's VIN number upon first turning on the ignition after having its power disconnected i.e.. Vehicle servicing / flat battery etc.. If the Led stays permanently on when the ignition is switched on, the system will need to check the vehicle for its VIN number and compare with its expected VIN number. During this process, which can take upto 20 seconds, the ignition must be left switched ON. Successful comparison is indicated by the LED extinguishing if the vehicle had previously been unimmobilised or by a rapid flashing showing that the vehicle is immobilised.

I hope this helps. :-)

Just another thought!

Have you tried to disconnect the battery again and reconnect it?

Here is another extract from the same paperwork:

Quote
Functional testing of the immobiliser
To carry out a functional test of the immobiliser. Switch off the ignition and press the lock button on the keyfob. The LED will flash for 15 seconds and then turn to a slow flash every 3 seconds. Turn on the ignition and try to start the vehicle. The vehicle will not crank and visual indication will be given that the vehicle is IMMOBILISED by a rapid flashing of the LED. Turn off the ignition and press the 'unlock' button on the keyfob. The visual indicators will have extinguished if illuminated and the vehicle can now be started in the normal way

very frustrating when this happens - you could go the usa pcm option or get your local jeep dealer to look at it (the isle of man does not have a franchise jeep dealer) the cost for you would be about the same.
for waggers the shipping to the uk doubled the cost.......hence the usa option.

You need a second hand American spec PCM from the same jeep as yours and the same year, then just plug it in and away you go, no more key fob. The PCM cost me $200 and the postage was £35. If you want to go down the new pcm road try this link

Ps I have emailed this guy on ebay and he was only too happy to help

Hope this helps
