rebuilding an auto box can be a pain in the arse especially if you haven't done one before, what you could do is put in a replacement and learn how to build an auto with the damaged one.
if your swapping like for like then it would be a plug in and go

The 42RE and AW4 have different bolt patterns, so you need the XJ transfer case too. Oh, and a new PCM.

The AW4 is controlled by it's own control module under the dash / firewall area - it just needs a couple of electrical inputs from other sensors. I don't know exactly which inputs but it must be throttle position sensor as one. I'd be interested if you go this route and get the AW4 working from these inputs.

well ive rebuilt quite a few fork lift auto boxes but they're a compleatly different breed of fish to the ones in cars.

yer panic im interested, have you got a price for the box an xfer?
an please don't tell me your in wales or anywhere near london!!!!

if itwas just a case swaping the pcm an tcm i'd give it a go but it doesn't look like it an right now can't be doing with the hassle an down time of it, altho i do have a full donor xj

is it definate i can't fit a xj 242 to the 42re as i really want the 2wd option!!??
