I haven't managed to get it out yet so I don't know wether it has any locating point but the shaft is offset and if you don't put it in the right place it will affect caster/camber settings.  I see that they fit them in the US as an adjustable joint with a set up kit but not sure if this is stock?  I'm fairly sure about most of the vehicles history and I'm sure it is.

Any thoughts?

I had to think twice about that one

adjustable ball joints as far as i can remember are only an aftermarket fitment sourced from the states

They were a warranty fix to tweak the camber/caster if customers complained of pulling to one side.Usually found on ZGs, never come an XJ having them. A stock one is a straight swap.
