T18 transmission
« on: December 03, 2008, 11:47:19 AM »

Ok all you tech heads, nows youre time to shine.
Ive located a t18 out of a cherokee, so what i need to know is,

1 Will it be a short shaft
2 are jeep t18s different to ford t18s what i mean is,  is the bellhousing bolt pattern at the transmission end different.
My engine is a tickford xr6 ford, ive got 2 brand new ally bellhousings with the 4 hole pattern at the tranny end. I could allways machine an adaptor plate but it would be nice if i could just bolt something straight on for a change :-)

Cherry had long shaft and huge bell housing to get gear stick back from under dash.
Best to google this or look at Pirate website for rebuild info and there is lots.
Off top of head 'Hicks" do a short shaft and T18 rebuild kit and you need later CJ gearbox from T176 (I think) T18s are configured to run Dana 20 so Advance adapters are your best shot if you are running some'at else.
As I said I researched this earlier in year and just google it and you'll have an evenings reading and resources to use.
Sorry can't help with Ford stuff. but think T18s from Fords are short shaft.

Yep ive been looking into it, and the transmission i need is the ford t18 because it has the 6.5 inch input shaft, as opposed to the jeep t18 ive found which has a 15.5 inch shaft. What a bummer!
I could get the short shaft kit , and the adapter plate to put my dana 300 on the back but im looking at loads of sheckles, and things are tight at the moment.
Cheers guys.

Well firstly they are bullet proof, secondly the majority have a 6.32:1 first gear ratio, so it will crawl over anything. Its also a fairly short box (about the same as a sr4) and you can buy adapters for most engines and transfer boxes. The only negative thing about the t18 is the fact it has no syncro in 1st gear, but im not fussed. :-)

Why! have you got a better idea?  Fire away dude.

There was a rare box with synchro on 1st called the T19 same deal just with synchro.
People that have them just drive them on the street as a three speed and leave the first gear for off road.
And here's the link about converting to short input from long input, just found it how retentive is that? http://www.jeepfan.com/projects/t18_swap.htm.

The only auto trans that fits is a 6 speed zf (loadsa spondoolies) and then id have to adapt the dana 300 on the back (loads more spondoolies) i spose i could sell a kidney, or maybe my left nacker, either way im up the creek without a paddle.
