Noisy auto box
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:12:20 PM »

Hi,
I have a whine from the auto box on my 98 4.0 Grand. It does it in first & second at any speed, as soon as you start to move. I've had to top the oil up 3 times in 9k miles but there doesn't appear to be any significant leaks.
Also when turning on full lock the front wheels feel as tho they are trying to skip.
Could both these probs be related? or is the latter usual in 4WD?
Wish I'd stuck to my old XJ,  :-(
Thanks Paul

the skipping would say to me that it was in part time 4x4 or the cv's are in megga bad shape.

If it's binding up/hopping on full lock, remove the front propshaft and see if the problem goes, if it does the viscous coupling in the transfer box is siezed.

The 42RE transmission does whine when pulling off.
