1999 Cherokee VM starting problem
« on: February 28, 2010, 09:45:22 PM »

I have been browsing through the archives on starting problems but glow plugs seems to be the answer of choice. I have changed these and tested that they work, which they do. I have also checked injector leakage/ leak off and also changed the temp sensors in the heads but it still starts like the glowplugs aren't working, coughing and spluttering with a fair bit of smoke then running fine and once warm it's good all day. Is there anything else I should check? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

check the soft rubber hoses as these can perish over time. when you prime the fuel filter will the jeep start quickly after that ? if so then you might have a leak there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am pretty sure the pipes are OK but I will try the primer and see if that does show up anything. I will also try checking the glow plug relay when it is cold to see if that has a problem. When it checked it before it was a mild day, today it was -4 deg and a real pig to start!

My VM dropped smoke in the exhaust on starting, but seemed to run fine once started. Then it got harder to start (same exhaust smoke) until I had to spray WD40 into the instake every time. And then is stopped starting completely.
(1) Glowplugs had never been changed, so I started there - but made no difference (well, it probably did once whatever else was the problem was fixed)
(2) Had it stripped down and the fuel-injection pump came back from inspection as mis-timed. Not quite sure how they can fall out of timing if the mechanical one, but hey...
(3) To add insult to injury, the CPS also crapped out, so replaced that as well.
...it now starts in the workshop, but not put it all back together again to see if it starts on the button after a cold night.
