Transmission Noise
« on: January 11, 2009, 09:46:26 PM »

Hi Folks
My 1999 GC V8 with 130k miles on the clock has delevoped a drone some were in the front transmission at speed of 30 mph and above. The noise gets lounder up to 60 mph and then tops out. There isn't any play on the front prop /wheel bearings/UJ's. The auto box and transfer case work without fault or any clunks /jerks.
When I jacked up each corner to check for bearing play and held the wheel and rotated the wheel back and forth ,I could move it about 1" before feeling the transmisson ,is this normal or excessive play . To me driving the droning seems in the front diff  area , but this is hard  to prove from the drivers seat. Is 130k a lot for a front diff.
By the way there is plenty of fluid of the correct types were it should be.
Any pointers would help me greatly  . :-D

Front diff bearings?  They're a weak spot on the smaller dana axles.

Yukon AMC 20 full pinion kit $105 (£72) from eBay with postage, should be below new tax threshold too.

I did try lighthouse and was £75 without pinion nut and shims

Good comms so far ordered yesterday so will let you know how rest of service is

You'd be wise to ask the same question of the NAGCA forum, given the response here.
