Have I only got 2wd instead of 4?

My Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4L '97 auto is permanent 4wd. Despite this, it has 4wd display lights in the centre console (I would have thought they would be redundant?). Until recently all4 lights have been on, clearly, since it is permanent 4wd, but in the last week the two lights indicating the rear wheels have been going out intermittently. Now, it would obviously seem to me to be simply a problem with the lights which I can ignore, but still on a learning curve with Jeeps, I am a little worried that perhaps the 4wd is electronically controlled and that I may indeed have a drive issue? Can anyone put an end to my worries- I can live with a bad connection, but NOT with 2wd!!
