MPG?
« on: January 22, 2009, 08:28:44 PM »

I bet this has been discussed loads on here, but as a newbie, I thought I would add my views.

Just bought a 1995 4.0l Cherokee and put £35 in it once the fuel light had come on. I next saw the fuel light 91 miles later.

Working that out it comes out as £3.76 per gallon (based on 82.9p per litre) so £35 is 9.3 gallons. 91 miles on 9.3 gallons = 9.78mpg.

Somehow I don' think this is right...even for town driving.

Where should I be looking (apart from Autotrader) to rectify this.

Thanks
Mike

average around 18 mpg, has seen high and have seen lower quite alot.

i dont want to sound rude but you buy a 4ltr jeep knowing the fuel economy is basically crap but you get alot more if you drive the jeep carefully and not like a normal car

The low fuel light on a mk1 XJ has a mind of its own. Do not trust it.
Fill it to the neck, drive, note your miles, then fill it to the neck again to get the litres you used. Work it out that way.

Dave69,

Don't get me wrong, I knew the MPG would be bad, but I was expecting 15mpg ish around town...not 9.

mike, is your car an auto? I average around 17mpg in my auto jeep going up to high 20's on a run but I have a very laid back driving style on the road.
The best thing to do with your jeep if you want to keep it fairly long term is to put lpg on it and then they are fabulous.

My car is an auto.

Perhaps I have just been amazed that how well it goes for a 4x4 and have abused it as a result.

I will try to take it a bit easier and see what happens :)

Thanks

I only get 120 miles for £20 of gas, don't think the straight 6 is a particularly frugal engine.
Me pal's 4.7v8 Grand Cherry gets slightly better mileage on the gas and that's a larger engine/vehicle.Although he has multipoint and  being a commoner I only have single point.

Exactly!

RE: The fuel gauges & lights do indeed have a mind of their own.
My TJs light is good for 30miles
I stressed when I first had my Jeep & saw how few miles it got on the bottom 1/4 tank. That was until I realised that during the mid 2 quarters it went a bit further!
Just fill it up & run it; then you'll get a better idea.

use mine which is a 1994 4ltr stealth every day for work, do approx 40 miles and put £20 a week in, works out to 11mpg.

mainly start stop traffic though. and it loves to be booted off the lights and show up the boy racer nobs!
