turbo oil leak
« on: January 30, 2009, 05:36:42 PM »

evening all..  my 96 TD cherokee has a couple of oil leaks.  one is coming from the front crankshaft seal under the crank pully, the other seems to be coming from the turbo to intercooler pipe.

This is the best picture i could really get, I was under the impression only air should be going through this pipe??  would this be a turbo failure or something else leaking ino it??

Cheers,
Joel.

Suspect something else is leaking onto it as the oil is on the outside of the pipe. Pull the intercooler to turbo pipe off and check (pray) there's no oil inside.

ok, i'l check it in the morning, and see what else there is down there that could be leaking onto it.

if the pipe has got oil in it (which i really hope it hasn't) is there just an oil seal in the turbo or will it be completely knackard?

Also, how hard will it be to change the front crank oil seal??  is it something that can be done at home or will i need some other special tools to do it?  i have a pit so i can access it easily enough.

Cheers,
Joel.

i had that on mine and i couldn't trace the leak until the turbo blew. the internal seals failed but i was still unsure how the oil got to the outside of the pipe

There will be a small amount of oil in the turbo hose. This is ok as long as it is minimal. If it's pouring out you need a new turbo..
